It’s two years since media140 launched our inaugural event on the 20th May 2009, an idea originally conceived by Ande Gregson as a fund raiser for the UK charity, Mencap, to secure a place in the legendary Marathon des Sables. It’s certainly not the usual way to start a social business, but as good a reason as any, and this philanthropic philosophy still remains at the heart of media140 today.


In a previous post, freelance copywriter and editor Rachel Pictor explored the relationship between individuals and the Internet, with an emphasis on social media in the context of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. She concluded that social media performs a lot of functions which fulfil the needs of individuals, enabling them to interact, do business and act creatively and spontaneously.
